In response to state and regional mandates, Santa Cruz County leaders have submitted draft plans to permit over 6,000 new homes in unincorporated areas of the county over the next eight years.
Most of these potential homes are planned for areas in Aptos, Live Oak, and Soquel. The state authorities have required the county to permit 4,634 new homes in these areas from June 30, 2023, to December 15, 2031, which is more than three times the county’s previous unmet goal.
Public meetings will be held in the coming months to discuss and refine the Housing Element before its final submission to the state on November 15.
